Synopsis: In 1977, Meliton decided to retire from his prestigious position as lieutenant colonel after serving with great success in the army. However, his retirement does not mark the end of his journey, as fate has other plans for him. The people of Baras recognized his leadership qualities and unwavering commitment and urged him to run for the prestigious office of mayor. With the support and encouragement of his fellow citizens, Meliton began a new chapter in his life.
But as fate would have it, his path to victory as mayor was not without challenges. His opponent, driven by a sense of political rivalry, made serious accusations against Meliton and accused him of “political subversion”. This term, according to the then Philippine electoral law, referred to the act of changing one's affiliation with a political party within a certain time frame surrounding the election. Meliton, however, refused to accept the Court's decision, unswerving in his convictions and resolute in his determination.
In a remarkable display of defiance and unwavering commitment, Meliton chose to remain in his office at City Hall and refused to give in to the court's decision. His actions were not only a protest, but also a sincere campaign for the victory of his candidacy. The love and support of his people was a constant source of strength and strengthened his resolve to fight for what he believed was right.
However, the Supreme Court recognized the need to uphold the law and ordered the military to remove Meliton from office by force if necessary. Faced with the threat to innocent lives, Meliton made the difficult decision to surrender, not wanting to tolerate further bloodshed. It was a moment of great sacrifice, driven by his deep sense of responsibility to his community.
But the Meliton story doesn't end there. Undeterred by the challenges he faced, he decided to overcome the odds and continue his journey. In the elections that followed, he re-entered the political stage determined to make a difference. And despite all odds, he emerged victorious, proving that resilience and unwavering commitment can overcome even the greatest obstacles.
His remarkable commitment marked an impressive 14 years of his life as the esteemed mayor of Baras. During his tenure, he gained widespread notoriety for his unwavering commitment to fighting corruption, drug trafficking and various other criminal activities plaguing the city. What distinguished Geronimo from his predecessors was his imaginative and unconventional approach to law enforcement. With a whip in hand, he fearlessly patrolled the streets, striking fear into criminals and earning the unforgettable nickname “Mayor Latigo.”
